There are two opportunities to help in Kenton County with the 2023 Primary Election.
EARLY VOTING
Dates: May 11th - 12th - 13th
Time: 7 AM - 4:30 PM
ELECTION DAY VOTING
Date: Tuesday, May 16th
Time: 5 AM - 6:30 PM
Training sessions are held April 24th through May 9th. Per statute, you must attend a training session to work the election. View the KY Election Officers' Training Guide here.
Qualifications, compensation, and job descriptions are listed below. If you have questions, send us an email. The deadline to apply is March 15th.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Registered voter in Kenton County
- Can't be the spouse, parent, brother, sister, or child of a candidate who is to be voted for in the precinct they are working.
- Must be flexible and go to locations outside their city to fill open positions and achieve parity
TIMING FOR 3-DAY EARLY VOTING
- Polls open 7:30 AM TO 4 PM
- Must be at polling location by 6:30 AM for the first day, then 7 AM.
- Must stay until all voters in line at 4 PM have voted.
- Can't leave until ALL ELECTION OFFICIALS have completed work.
COMPENSATION: (Must work the entire Election Day to be paid for training class)
- $20.00 for two-hour training class
- $125.00 per day
TIMING FOR ELECTION DAY
- Polls open 6 AM TO 6 PM
- Arrive at polling location by 5 AM
- Must stay until all voters in line at 6 PM have voted.
- Can't leave until ALL ELECTION OFFICIALS have completed work.
COMPENSATION: (Must work the entire Election Day to be paid for training class)
- $20.00 for two-hour training class
- $150.00 for Election Day
TRAINING: 2 Hour training class @ Kenton County Government Center, 2nd floor, 1840 Simon Kenton Way, Covington
JOBS: Judge, Clerk, and Sheriff
Judge: There are two judges per precinct of opposite parties. Depending on the size of the facility, there may be additional judges.
Responsibilities include:
- Set up tables for voters with privacy screens
- Lift 40 lbs to set up and take down the Express Vote ballot marker
- Open both the DS200 scanner & Express Vote ballot marker
- Work with the Clerk to use ballot accountability report to verify the number of pre-printed ballots.
- Use verification forms to verify the security of machines
- Produce security zero tapes and result tapes
- Monitoring all voting equipment throughout the day
- Close both election machines at the end of the day
- Assist voters on how to use the voting equipment
- Assist disabled voters
- Work with Clerk(s) at the end of the day to finalize ballot accountability report to verify the number of used, spoiled and unused pre-printed ballots.
- Work with Troubleshooter to return security materials and USB sticks for tabulation.
Clerk/Sheriff: There will be two clerks per precinct. There can be one sheriff per location. Depending on the size of the facility, there may be additional clerks or sheriffs. The clerk and the sheriff are cross-trained on the following responsibilities.
Clerk-specific responsibilities include:
- Set up tables to be able to check in voters
- Using the e-poll book to check in voters
- Using the express printer with the e-poll books
- Give voters the correct pre-printed ballot and/or poll slip
- Working with Judge(s) to use ballot accountability report to verify the number of pre-printed ballots.
- Work with Troubleshooter to contact Clerk's office to help voters.
- Assist voters with spoiled ballot situations
- Work with Judge(s) at the end of the day to finalize ballot accountability report to verify the number of used, spoiled, and unused pre-printed ballots.
- Work with Judge(s) to verify the number of voter check-ins against the number of ballots scanned into DS200.
Sheriff-specific responsibilities include:
- Set up tables for voters and clerks
- Ensure the American Flag sign is outside near the voter door
- Put "vote here" signage outside
- Put up all signage inside voting location
- Put up all notices for voters (i.e. sample ballots, withdrawals)
- Instruct Voters to have identification ready
- Work with Troubleshooter to contact Clerk's office to help voters
- If needed, assist in handing out ballots to voters.
- Stand behind the last voter at 6 PM
- Take down all signage and tape results to the door.
- Help take down and put away all voting equipment that needs to be stored or returned to the County Clerk's office.
